"Old" Pricing Gives Way to "New" Pricing and New Prices Are Creeping Higher!
Are Food Prices on the Way Up? It Sure Seems that Way as a "Perfect Storm" of Environmental and Political Events Combine to Push those Prices Upwards.
Food Suppliers Are Powerless to Prevent It
Storeitfoods.com is proud to be affiliated with a number of suppliers of storage foods who have made a consious effort to keep their prices low and affordable. Despite their best efforts, however, they can resist those upward pressures for only so long. Consider what Nutriom, our supplier of OvaEasy freeze dried egg products, has to say as they announce a recently announced price increase.
Extremely hot and dry summer weather in the Midwest increased egg-laying hens’ mortality and also reduced egg production for the surviving birds. This resulted in an unusual egg shortage in the middle of summer
Early this year the European Union implemented an enhanced cage regulation that resulted in a 25% reduction in egg production. This required egg imports from the US in large quantities that continue to this date
Since late June Mexico has experienced an avian flu epidemic that to date has resulted in the death of at least 20 million layers out of a total of 100 million. As a consequence Mexico is importing a weekly average of 200 truckloads of shell eggs and egg products from the US.
Finally, the same hot and dry summer weather in the Midwest resulted in a corn crop very much reduced from prior estimates, leading to a steep increase in corn prices, including corn futures. Since corn is the main component in the layers’ diet this price increase impacted current egg prices and will impact future ones, impeding the price reduction that typically occurs past the Christmas holidays.
The only advice that we can give: Learn to cope. Priortize. Purchase early if you can. These same types of pressures are being felt by other producers, and it seems inevitable that future prices will be going up rather than down. If you want the benefit of lower prices, now is probably the time to buy.
