The Guardian shake flashlight is an inexpensive, simple and rugged solution to emergency lighting needs. A few seconds of shaking translates into several minutes of effective lighting. The secret is electromagnetic induction, or the moving of a magnet through copper coils. As you swing or shake it back and forth you're actually powering a miniature generator. It's probably the least labor intensive of all the no battery designs. It may not quite match the 3 LED lighting of some of the crank type flashlights carried by Store-It, but most people are quite satisfied with the lighting provided by that single LED bulb, which, by the way, is rated to last 100,000 hours.
It's a perfect flashlight for seniors or anyone who suffers from arthritic hands or other joint problems. The back and forth shaking is easy to do and does not require the firm grips or wrist flexibility needed for squeezing, pulling or winding.
Beware, however, or imitators. These shake flashlights contain no batteries. Many new "fake shake" flashlights claim to be rechargeable when actually they use generic lithium batteries. These are the real deal. The waterproof case floats in water and the light is visible up to one mile.
They're small, light weight and great additions to any emergency survival kit, but don't limit their usage to 72 hour kits. Keep one handy at the bedside. Have one easily accessinle in the kitchen or hallway closet. Your Guardian shake flashlight can prove invaluable during any power outage, and, of course, "dead batteries" will never be a worry.
