Everything in it has been carefully selected to provide the essentials needed to survive for at least three days during an unexpected emergency that might take someone away from home and away from other resources. It also allows for the personalizaton of the 72-hour kit by leaving room for the addition of those things necessary to meet individual needs. A detailed list is available, but, in brief, the one person essentials kit contains both food and water (with a 5 year shelf life) as well as items relating to light and communication, shelter and warmth, hygiene and sanitation, and first aid.
