Eating Wisely Can Still Mean Eating Well

It can be difficult to curb a sweet tooth and the more you deprive yourself of treats the more hard-done by you feel. Most of us know the miserable feeling that comes from cutting out favourite foods, or sticking to strict or rigid meal-plans. Thankfully there`s no reason why sweet treats need to be completely banished but it can help to find some healthy alternatives if you indulge a bit too regularly.

There`s nothing more detrimental to a diet or healthy eating plan than feeling as though you are limited in what you can eat, but by eating cleverly and being a little creative it`s still possible to satisfy those cravings while taking in less calories.

Try to save sweet treats until after a main meal as a full tummy means you are inclined to consume less. Mindless snacking throughout the day is easy to do, but before you realise it you have undone all your effort and hard work.

One pudding which can be a great alternative to heavier desserts is sugar-free jelly, which tastes just as good as the real thing and has the benefit of being light and refreshing. With so many flavours to choose from, you need never get bored of this treat.

Another tip is to buy sugar free ice-pops, or low fat products like frozen juice pops or frozen yogurt. The bonus with frozen items is that they take ages to eat, meaning you feel satisfied for longer and are less likely to go overboard. Another idea is to make your own ice pops from fruit juice, or to freeze fruit like grapes and raspberries and enjoy them in a new way.

Dairy products can be surprisingly versatile when it comes to satisfying a sweet tooth and yogurt is a must-have, whether flavoured or natural. Mix a dollop of honey into plain yogurt or add chopped fruit and nuts to make it more filling. A glass of milk can also be a good healthy snack, especially if flavoured. The same goes for hot chocolate and there are numerous low calorie options available from which to choose.

Of course when it comes to being really healthy fruit can be a lifesaver as it`s sweet, low fat and tasty. Added to that there are so many types to choose from and it can be interesting to seek out new and exotic varieties and find different ways of enjoying them, whether it be on their own or included in smoothies or juices.

Try to have a rule where you follow a healthy eating plan 80% of the time, or alternatively save tasty favourites for the weekend or special occasions. Eating well is all about getting the balance right and if your diet is generally healthy, you need not feel guilty about helping yourself to some cheap sweets or other sugary treats every once in a while.
